I Spy a Breakfast Surprise

Breakfast can end up being one big bowl of sugar! It is also the most important meal of the day. So, I figured that effort needed to be made, to ensure that there’s lots of opportunity, to fill my little one with as much goodness and love, as I could, first thing in the morning.

*put’s thinking cap on….

What is it that children love?……

…..adventure, fun, hide and seek and I spy!

With this in mind, I list the Ingredients:

(serves 1)

4 strawberries

4 tablespoons of your favourite Glenisk yogurt

1 teaspoon of ground almond

A dribble of honey

7 blueberries

1/4 teaspoon (or less) coco powder to dust the top layer

(We used the following kitchen equipment: Small glass ramekin, tablespoon, a child friendly knife, a child sized sieve)

We used Glenisk Greek Style yogurt this time but will be trying all the flavours over time to make this activity really work!

now it’s off to see what she can find in her “I Spy a Breakfast Surprise”

Looking at the bottom of the bowl for clues!

Textures can be a big issue for children when exploring new foods.

MT cleaned her plate along with a glass of her own freshly squeezed OJ…… and asked for more!

Note(s):

This recipe is especially good for fussy eaters. Involving children in their own food preparation can be key to get them eating. Also, the fun element in spying what you have in your breakfast surprise will keep them eating through the layers to see what they can find. Changing the layers around each time will make it even more enticing and more fun to eat. Even have the children make you or other family members a breakfast surprise and turn it into a family affair. A nice way to spend a Sunday morning in the PJ’s!

Touching off other learning opportunities:

There are so many that I could list but here are just a few:

Categorising: Learning the names of the fruits.

I spy: For younger children you can spy with colours i.e. I spy something red… for older children you can use the letter sound and for older children again, you can simply use the letter name.

Shapes & patterns: A circle was made when placing the blueberries & my ramekin is also a circle.

Numbers: Counting the fruit pieces and spoonfuls of yogurt.

I want to keep going but I also want the emphasis of this post to be on fussy eaters so I will stop and just leave you with the few listed above.

Try out this fun breakfast using your favourite Glenisk yogurts and make breakfast time fun with everyone cleaning their plates or ramekins as the case maybe!
